| biggbrother Premium Member 2001-Nov-28 12:29 am Can WinXP log onto Verizon DSL at startup?DSL success! My install date was Dec 4 but the service is working already. I did a test at DSLR Tools and I have 722kbps down and 122kbps up. I tested for possible tweaks and I am told that I am pretty much at maximum. Thanks for the great advice in this maze. One minor gripe maybe someone can an help me out with. I have Windows XP and I have three users: Myself, Wife, and Guest. When starting up the PC and choosing a user, I still have to double-click on the Verizon DSL connection icon to initiate the connection. Is there a way (such as with cable modems) to have this connection automatically logon when XP starts up within a users profile, or even at the Windows XP startup page? As you know, if you use Hotmail, XP tells you at the startup page how many new e-mail messages each user has . Well I don't know how accurate this would be if I have to double click the icon to establish a connection to Verizon for web surfing. Basically, I don't want to have to double click an icon like its dialup. Any tips? Thanks |

| Paul928 to biggbrother Member 2001-Nov-28 8:09 am First of all congrats on getting your DSL up and running. Now I am assuming that you are using the native PPPoe in Windows Xp to connect. First you have to right click on your My Network Connection icon. Go to properties, and you'll see your connection to Verizon. Right click on your Verizon connection, and go to properties, and you'll see a window with tabs. Click on the option tab and make sure that prompt for names and password is clicked off. Click okay and that is it. Then you will have to make a shortcut to your WAN Miniport (PPPoe) to your startup files. Reboot and you should connect to your DSL automatically when the computer boots up. Good luck, and congrats again, I hope you enjoy your DSL |

| biggbrother to Paul928 Premium Member 2001-Nov-29 11:55 am OK. My PC now connects to Verizon DSL automatically upon entry into a user's desktop. I wish it would connect at the startup screen, but I guess I can settle for this. The only problem I had was with the Guest username. Whenever I entered XP through the Guest username, I was unable to double-click on any network connections such as Verizon DSL or my ISP dial-ip. The icons just wouldn't respond. maybe there's an option to allow it but I looked and looked and could not find it. The XP manual says that the Guest account allow opening programs, some installations, and browsing the Internet. But my Guest account would not allow network connections. So I just turned the Guest account off in Control Panel\Users and created a Limited account and called it "Visitor". Both my desktop and my wife's are password-protected at the startup screen, so whenever someone come over and asks to use the 'Net (for e-mail etc), they can go through the Visitor desktop and all of our stuff and the system integrity is safe. I love this feature of XP the most . I also turned of "Show Login Progress" in the Verizon PPPoe Network Connection properties box. So when it connects at desktop startup, I don't have to even see that dialog box pop up for a second. Hey..I'm picky! Thanks for the help! |

| Bob Carrick to biggbrother 2001-Nov-29 12:14 pm When you create a PPPoE based connection in XP, at the end it gives you the option to use this account for all users. Create a new account make sure you check off that option and then give that a try. |

That should take of that problem. |

weikai | weikai to biggbrother Member 2001-Dec-3 7:39 pm Add a power user or user privilige to the Guest account then do the setting in guest account. After you set up guest account, remove the added privilige. |
