Description Of Work This position has required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). Please review them carefully. ResponsibilitiesThis position reports to the Administrative Specialist II at a multi-custody female correctional facility and will process, review, and distribute ingoing/outgoing mail, packages, legal, certified, and courier mail. Other responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Maintaining security of the facility by searching and reviewing all incoming mail and when applicable and all outgoing mail for unauthorized items (contraband and correspondence deemed a threat to the safe, secure and orderly function of the institution).
- Opening, searching and distributing over 500 pieces of US mail and approximately 125 pieces of courier mail each day as well as 100 pieces of business mail.
- Delivering mail to both staff and offenders at the facility.
- Working with the Text Behind and GTL programs.
- Sorting and distributing large quantities of interoffice staff correspondence and mail.
- Maintaining a Security Threat Group listing and utilizing this list to determine censorship of outgoing and incoming mail and packages.
- Processing indigent offender mail accesses and maintaining the Daily Welfare Report to determine indigent eligibility.
- Entering and recording all trust fund deposits, cashier’s checks, certified checks and employee canteen deposits.
- Possessing and utilizing knowledge of Department of Adult Correction and institutional standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies governing the handling of all mail and parcels, disposition of unauthorized property and the Inmate Banking System.
- Utilizing a great degree of confidentiality, honesty and trustworthiness.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours of Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.
Note To Current State EmployeesThe salary grade for this position is NC02 (Salary Range: $31,200 - $46,734). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.
About Anson Correctional InstitutionAnson Correctional Institution houses female offenders in medium and close custody housing units. Anson CI offers a wide variety of educational, vocational, and training programs. Correction Enterprises operates the offender packaging operation at Anson, a partnership with Union Supply Direct through the Prison Industry Enhancement Program (PIE). Family and friends can order a package of goods from a pre-approved shopping list to send to an offender. Orders are packaged by offenders and shipped quarterly.

It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes Institutions with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff in state prisons as well as the division of Community Supervision. The Division of Institutions is one of the divisions in DAC andemploys a variety of staff, operates 56 institutions and is responsible for the care and custody of approximately 30,000 incarcerated individuals across North Carolina. Our division categorizes the institutions into 3 custody levels, which include minimum, medium, and close. The Division of Institutions has a duty to provide a secure and safe environment along with the proper care and supervision for every individual, in our custody.
