John Kay, 91

OCEANSIDE – John N. Kay, 91, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at hishome.

He was born Sept. 21, 1914, in Keiser, Ark. He retired in 1979from Calmar Inc. in the City of Industry.

Mr. Kay is survived by his wife of 40 years, Freedia Kay ofOceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Donald and Catherine Kay ofCypress and Bobby and Jessie Dixon of Searcy, Ark.; daughter LindaCalvert of Placentia; grandchildren Julie, Christine, Lauren,Rhonda, James, Mark and Kevin; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 11, atEternal Hills Mortuary.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct.12, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

The family suggests donations to Tri-City Hospice, 2095 W. VistaWay, Suite 220, Oceanside, CA 92054.

John Coats, 76

ESCONDIDO – John W. Coats, 76, died of natural causes, Monday,Oct. 3, 2005, at Escondido Care Center.

Born June 26, 1929, in Mitchell, S.D., he lived in Escondido forfive years. He retired in 1994 from the International Church of theFour Square Gospel.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1950 as a welder and wasawarded the Victory Medal. He was a member of the PresidentialLodge of Thurmont, Md., and the International Church of the FourSquare Gospel in Los Angeles.

Mr. Coats was preceded in death by his mother, Julia Mae Coats,in 1977.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Lydia M. andEdward F. Stephenson and Martha J. and Dennis Morell, all ofOceanside, and Alyce M. and Mark Dooley of Riverside; grandchildrenAmie, Meredith, Julia, Phillip and Candace; and onegreat-grandchild.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today, Oct. 11, atRiverside National Cemetery with Eric Hjeltness officiating.

Eugene Morse, 87

ESCONDIDO – Eugene Bernard Morse, 87, died of congestive heartfailure, Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, at his home.

Born Feb. 25, 1918, in Scranton, Pa., he lived in Escondido for39 years. He retired in 1983 from Hoover High School in SanDiego.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Navy Bandstationed at Norfolk, Va. He received a degree in music educationin 1941 from Ithaca College and a master’s degree in musiceducation in 1954.

He directed the handbell choir for his church and was themusical director of the Tami Thomas Band, where he wrote many ofthe arrangements and played the trombone. He ran trains for the SanDiego Model Railroad Museum.

Mr. Morse was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and LuluMorse.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Burtine Morse ofEscondido; and daughters Irene Olson and Susan Morse, both ofEscondido, and Marilyn Morse of Pomona.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, atQuesthaven Retreat in Escondido. His cremains will bescattered.

Gertrude de Slegte, 85

VISTA – Gertrude ìTrudy” de Slegte, 85, died Thursday, Oct. 6,2005, at her home.

Born March 11, 1920, in Shonebeck, Germany, she lived in Vistafor 19 years. She enjoyed dancing, music and reading.

Ms. de Slegte was preceded in death by her son, Peter de Slegte,July 6, 2005. She is survived by her sons, Harry de Slegte, Rogerde Slegte and Eddy de Slegte, all of Ontario, Canada, and Richardde Slegte of San Marcos; daughters Rita Madril of San Marcos, GayleMorressey of Ontario, Canada, and Lil McWilliams of Vista; eightgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Denise Leroux, 50

ESCONDIDO – Denise Leroux, 50, died of cancer, Wednesday, Oct.5, 2005, at Escondido Care Center.

Born Dec. 4, 1954, in Syracuse, N.Y., she lived in Escondido for20 years. She worked at Target for eight years.

Ms. Leroux was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanor A.Leroux; and sister Claudett Ahl.

She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, TabithaCopley-Jacuinde and Amber Copley and Edward Guerrero, all ofEscondido; sister and brothers-in-law Barbara and Howie Branim ofSun City and Larry Ahl of Escondido; and grandchildren Kyle,Michaela and Miguelito.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, atthe church at 1020 Rose Ranch Road in San Marcos with the Rev. JeffLee officiating.

A reception will follow. Private burial at San Marcos Cemeteryis planned.

The family suggests donations to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. CrestSt., Escondido, CA 92025.

Patsy Hyde, 76

VISTA – Patsy Ruth ìPat” Hyde, 76, died of lung cancer, Tuesday,Oct. 4, 2005, at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.

Born Jan. 7, 1929, in Des Moines, Iowa, she lived in Visa for 21years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of St. ThomasMore in Oceanside and the Shadowridge Country Club.

Mrs. Hyde was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Hyde;and son Jeff Hyde.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Charles J. Hyde ofVista; son and daughter-in-law C.J. and Terri Hyde of FortMitchell, Ky.; daughter and son-in-law Sheryl and Ryan Tschetter ofDana Point; grandchildren J.J., Ryan, Myka, Max, Kelsey, Kaley,Chas, Jacob, Patrick and Nick; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27,at the Church of St. Thomas More in Oceanside. Private inurnment isplanned.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to cancerresearch, or for a Mass at the Church of St. Thomas More.

Christine Crowley, 54

OCEANSIDE – Christine Crowley, 54, died Saturday, Oct. 8,2005.

Born June 7, 1951, in New York, she lived in Oceanside for 17years. She worked at the Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital for 15years. She enjoyed the California outdoors and relaxing at thebeach.

Ms. Crowley is survived by her parents, William and Anna Murphyof New York; sons David and Dennis of New Jersey; daughters Erinand Cara of California; and brother Robert of New York.

Viewing is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Oct. 11, atOceanside Mortuary Chapel with David Plank officiating.

The family suggests donations to an animal shelter of choice ora women’s shelter of choice.

Edward Jones, 48

OCEANSIDE – Edward Bernard Jones, 48, died of diabetes, Friday,Oct. 7, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in LaJolla.

Born Dec. 10, 1956, in Arkansas, he lived in Oceanside for 20years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a chef for 12 years.He worked at Deutsch Co. for seven years.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 20 years, Felina V. Jonesof Oceanside.

The rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. and funeral service at10:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Eternal Hills Mortuary.

Julia Filanc, 50

SAN DIEGO – Julia Lynn Filanc, 50, died of lung cancer andscleraderma, Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at Scripps MemorialHospital.

Born June 17, 1955, in Whittier, she lived in San Diego for 20years. She worked at Luminex Corp.

Ms. Filanc is survived by her parents, Jane and Jack Filanc ofDel Mar; brothers and sisters-in-law Peter and Francesca Filanc ofRancho Santa Fe, Jim and Ofelia Filanc of Rancho California andMark and Kim Filanc of Del Mar; and sister and brother-in-law Pollyand Don Mooney of Murrieta.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, atSolana Beach Presbyterian Church with Randy Giusta officiating. Hercremains will be scattered at sea.

Robert ‘Bob’ Crosby

Robert “Bob” Crosby, 62, born Feb. 10, 1943, passed away Oct. 6,2005.

He leaves behind wife Shirley; son Bill; and daughter ShirlDore. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Audrina, Robby,Zachary, Dallas and Sarah; as well as two sisters, Sandy Lopez andSheila Fontonat.

We will all miss his beautiful smile.
