hi,

Im a bit confused to what "radius" in the highlight and shadow section of smart sharpen is doing. The highlight and shadow section is dampening or undoing the main section of smart sharpen, however the bit I struggle with is what some websites describe the function of radius in the shadow and highlight is.."Radiusvalue controls the width of the area around each pixel that Photoshop looks at to determine if the pixel fits within the specified tonal range" — Isn't PS looking throughout the entire image to see which pixels are within the tonal range anyway? Can someone in simple terms explain this one to me or am I better off just to ignore the shadow and highlight section and just mask away/in areas for smart sharpen to affect? thanks

Every sharpening action has a radius parameter. If there was no radius, there would be no sharpening.

This is one of those things that are easier to show than explain.

No sharpening - low radius - high radius:

thanks for the reply. I get the radius for the MAIN smart sharpen section sharpening bit (pixel width each side of edge), but I DONT get the radius for the "highlight" and "shadow" section of smart sharpen. To me it seems to be implying (from what tutorials have said) that it is the pixel width from a shadow or highlight edge that is searched by PS to see if it also qualifies as a shadow or highlight pixel (met by the "tonal width" setting). If I have summarised this correctly, then Im asking if PS could find the highlight and shadow edges in the first place why Is it searching within a certain radius/pixel width to see if other pixels meet the criteria of the tonal width (set in "highlights" and "shadows" section)

    FAQs

What is the smart Sharpen effect? ›

Smart Sharpen increases the contrast at the edges of an image to give the illusion that the image is sharper. This works fine for images which are only a tiny bit out of focus. Focus Magic produces much better results. It has a much smaller halo effect and does not amplify the noise very much (if at all).

How do you Sharpen radius in Photoshop? ›

With the new duplicate layer selected, go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask. If you're using Photoshop Elements, you'll need to go to Enhance > Unsharp Mask. A dialog box will appear. Set the desired radius size, then choose the amount of sharpness to add.

How do I enhance a picture on PS? ›

    To make improvements:
    1. Open your picture in Photoshop.
    2. Select Filter and Blur.
    3. Pick Gaussian Blur as your next option, and use the slide to find the right range.
    4. Select OK.
    5. Find the Filter and Sharpen option.
    6. Select Unsharp.
    7. Use the slide until the image is as desired.
    8. Select OK.

Where do I find smart filters in Photoshop? ›

To add a Smart Filter, first select the Smart Object layer o in the Photoshop Layers Window. You can then select the filter you want to use from the Photoshop Filter menu. Photoshop then displays the filter dialog where you can apply your adjustments.

What is the default smart Sharpen? ›

And just like with Unsharp Mask, Smart Sharpen uses an Amount slider to control the amount of contrast. At the default Amount value of 200%, the image is already looking sharper. But how much sharper it looks depends on the size of your image and on the amount of detail.
