The note does not have to be complex nor does it need to have any fancy wor ding It merely needs to ex press your desire to have a nursing home here in Hender son County Statistics show that over 90 builder had not chosen to let this bridge be only a memory of the past Mr Glick related the statement from a retired co worker in his office who had kept a diary of their work in running the district bridge projects The diary said once we did something right just because it was the right thing to Although John Allaman and Ray Shafer insist it was a com bined effort not from just their part in the project it took so meone to get the ball rolling The preservation of the templates of Mr great grandfather original builder of the covered bridge in 1866 made the project a possibility And it was Ray enthusiasm for wanting to take on the project of reconstruction that got Henderson County and their neighbors excited about the idea Tag from the Monmouth District Ill Dept of Transportation (DOT) (now retired) stood with Mr Shafer after the flood in 1962 looking at the two piles of shambles they had helped pull out of the flood waters really not going to try to do he asked Mr Shafer felt the ma jority of the pieces could be saved and if everything was numbered it could be reconstructed It did lode like a couple of brush piles he remarked The covered bridge had stood for 116 years with a lot carv ings of names and dates Most of them have been put back in to the bridge One date was in the up high in one of the cross besoms probably etched by one of the original builders of crew After 116 years the bridge was washed out in 1982 and in 1984 finished and rededicated during Heritage Trails The two years which the bridge did not set across Henderson Creek inspired most of the residents ato help when they could It was a sad loss and no one wanted to see the empty spot at the rest area Mr Chafer said Mr Allaman did a lot of footwork in help Nursing Home Noods Your Help portunity to truly impress upon the State Board that even though we are a small county we have a great deal of sup port and enthusiasm behind in On US 34 Injured Two The lllinois Department of Transportation received word from the federal government this past week that they had been selected as 1st place winners in the United States for their work in Preservation and Cultural The state engineer in charge of bridges for the Peoria district Glick immediately shared the honor with Ray Shafer (left) and John Allaman (right) for their endeavors that made the award possible He presented them each with a special award magazine that details the contest and shows a colored pictured which had been taken by Mr Glick for the contest Under the picture was the irst Place announcement and this wording: the Henderson Covered Bridge on State Route 164 was destroyed by flood waters the decision was made to restore it to its original appearance The timbers from the original bridge were salvaged from the creek Severely damaged ones were replaced 'and cut to shape using the original patterns saved by the great grandson The entubridge was reconstructed on the bank then moved into or over 10 years the ederal Highway Administration (HWA) has held annual award competition to recognize outstanding highway designs Judging for the Biennial Awards Excellence in Highway was held July 2325 in Washington DC Winning en tries were selected by a panel of judges with expertise relevant to the categories of competi tion Out of 211 eligible entires totaling 576 photographs showing multiple views of projects the judges evaluated the written descriptions and photographic views over a 2 day period The biographies of the 5 judges were quite impressive in itself ing anyway he could and in making things more convenient Mr Allaman said it was a combined effort from Historical Society members and supporters Clarence Neff in getting the state grant of 160000 to rebuild volunteer help from various carpenters equipment and man power from the Henderson County Highway Department and IDOT in help ing get the remains out of the water and hauled to their state building near Union High School They recalled that it was early work injhe House of Representatives that got a law passed to put Covered bridges under the care of the state as far as upkeep but once the bridge was destroyed it was out of their hands legally Mr Allaman said at first his only hope was to save the pieces and reassemble it in the park as a monument but know it would be possible to put it back across the creek It was the engineering help and landscaping help of Mr Glick and the IDOT along with the grant money and fun draisers of the historical society that enabled that dream to cometrue Bloodmobile At Oquawka Honored or Helping
